Unassisted Triple Plays and Immaculate Innings

On the day when both the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals won a game, another team (well, one member of the team) pulled off another rarity in baseball. The unassisted Triple Play. In the continuing saga of the New York Mets in freefall, their game with the Philadelphia Phillies ended abruptly in the ninth inning, when Eric Bruntlett pulled off the three outer by himself. In the modern era of baseball, it has happened only 15 times and only twice has the triple play ended the game. On a similar note, I spotted this in my reader, where "immaculate innings" are being tracked. What's an "immaculate inning," you ask? That's when a pitcher strikes out the side on nine pitches. It has happened only 42 times. Three pitchers have done it twice, but none have ever done it three times.

Two Grand Salamis in One Game

"Who are Those Guys?"

First off, name the movie for the above line. Bonus points for actually identifying the names of "those guys."

Last night, Mark Buehrle, not content to have thrown a perfect game in his last outing, decided to break the record of retiring 41 straight batters by getting past 45 (that's 27 from the perfect game and 18 more from last night's game).

Now as to this team that plays here in Washington, DC. What has gotten into them? They seem to have found something and have been cracking their bats over their opponents, now having won four in a row and six of their last eight. So when do playoff tickets go on sale? Yes, well, don't get your hopes up, they are still more than 25 games out of first place in the NL East.

A significant record was notched by Nationals outfielder, Josh Willingham in the game against the Brewers on Monday night. Willingham hit two grand slams in the same game, only the 13th time this has happened in the era of modern baseball. Please note this is five less occasions than the perfect games. Evidently baseball is harder than it looks.

Here's the list, which in of itself is interesting as it does not necessarily feature those marquee names that one might expect (there are only two hall of famers on the list). Further, it is interesting to note (and this was a subject of discussion at the lunch table) that, with only one exception, all of these took place on the road.

From the Commissioner . . .

I know many of you are fairly new to the league and are still learning the nuances of the rules. That is perfectly reasonable, as it can get complicated. Processing all of the weekly transactions and checking their accuracy is a lot of work, and sometimes I miss things or make mistakes. I do the best I can to be accurate. That said, if I feel like an owner is intentionally trying to slip a move by me that in my opinion knowingly breaks the rules, as commissioner I will take league action. In this specific case, I think it was just an honest mistake... I know we are all friends, but at times people can get competitive over very small stuff. So, if you have any question in your mind about the rules on a move, please don't hesitate to ask me. And if I am not certain, I will check our league rules and the roto book to make sure.

Draft . . . The Aftermath

From the Commissioner:

Dear Owners,

I just wanted to thank everyone for an enjoyable draft this year. It was nice to see everyone laughing and having a good time with it. There were a few moments in particular that I will remember for a long time.

Anyway, special thanks to Cliff and Colleen for hosting - Colleen's cooking was delicious and their new great room was a perfect fit for our large group. Cliff, please pass on a special thanks to your wife from all of us.

Also, thanks to Tom for filling in for Don on short notice. It is good to know that we can always count on Tom! Don, I couldn't properly convey how hard Tom worked to do a good job for you. His bidding war with Pfeiffer for Lyle Overbay's services was particularly noteworthy... and amusing.

Okay, so where do we stand now? We will have our first transaction deadline on Tuesday April 14th at 11PM Eastern. Current standings will determine the replacement priority. The only exception being for three players acquired during the auction on Saturday (Joe Koshansky, Dusty Brown and Chad Cordero). These three players did not make an American League Major League roster, and will receive the lowest priority for replacements during the first two transaction periods (regardless of their owner's place in the standings). Please send me several players of interest in priority order if at all possible, as I am sure we will have many requests for the same players.

Please see the attached rosters and let me know if you see any errors. I am in the process of loading the teams onto the website (approx 40% done), and will hopefully finish tonight or tomorrow night.

Winter Meeting Notes

Winter Meeting Live!

• Issue of dispute involving the Commissioner's team. Federals suggest these should be resolved by arbitration or a vote of the league owners

III. Minor League Draft and Picks

• Federals suggest we cut minor league draft back to 2 rounds and keep 5 in the minors. Federals believe there are not enough players available to draft and to pick up during the season. Discussion. There are a variety of alternatives if we want to tweak these rulesIV. IP and AB team requirements
• We have had teams fall short of the IP and AB requirements in each of the last two seasons. At a minimum we should discuss these requirements. Please consider changing the IP and AB requirements for each team during the entire season to match totals in Roto Book, 900 IP and 4250 AB's - or something close to this. Currently, our rules call for 1,000 IP and 3,000 at-bats.
• In 2008, teams had the following total team AB's: 6295, 6267, 6589, 5777, 6930, 5696, 5907, 5138, 4994, 5803, 5548, 5856.
• In 2008, teams had the following total team IP's: 1002.3, 1333.7, 1206.0, 1286.3, 1268.7, 1557.0, 1314.7, 1218.0, 1507.3, 1252.3, 642.7, 1109.3.
  

V. Salary Cap

• WizNatSkins would like to consider raising the salary cap for each team. Is there a need for this? What impact would this have? Further clarification - this would be a salary cap raise to the bottom half of the league. Only about .10 per team. Those would be considered small market teams or perrinial losers, and be the ones to benefit.
  

VI. NL Players

• WizNatSkins would like to discuss the possibility of adding 1 NL player to each roster. Clarification - This is a suggestion for fun. The NL player won't be bid on, take one player @ that position. If that player is injured, his replacement has to also play same position.

VII. Other Business

• Reminder to bring website fee for Federals to the draft.

From the Commissioner - Winter Meeting

Several things . . .

1. I have not heard from anyone regarding dropping out of the league. So I am very happy to proceed with the same teams and owners as last season. If for some reason, your intentions have changed and you just haven't gotten around to letting me know, please let me know ASAP.
2. Looking ahead at possible fantasy draft dates, the season starts Sunday April 5th, with the first full slate of games on Monday April 6th. The best case scenario would have us doing the draft one of the days during that first week of the season, Monday April 6 through Friday April 10. Please check your schedules, and if at all possible keep as much flexibility as possible for that week. Thanks.
3. Winter Meeting - I am planning to hold the Winter Meeting during the last two weeks of February, exact date TBD. In an effort to boost owner participation, I am planning to do a Live Blog Meeting here. At the arranged date and time, owners will be come here and then enter comments in a comment field while reading other owners comments. John (Astronauts) will be handling the installation of the appropriate software that should allow us to communicate in real time. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this approach.
4. If you have any agenda items for the Winter Meeting, please send them to me. I will make another more official call out for agenda items in the next 1-2 weeks.
